The centre of Cartmel used to be marshy ground hundreds of years ago, with the river Eea flowing both north and south in the village. Eventually permanent bridges were built across the flows after they were made deeper.
Wheelhouse bridge is named after the structure on the east end of the bridge. The north parapet has the name and date stone. A stone bridge.
The coping stones have "C.C WHEELHOUSE BRIDGE" etched in. The date stone is in the fabric of the wall parapet.

There is plenty of free parking in Cartmel near the bridge.
Date built or dedicated as indicated on the date stone or plaque.: 1815
