Kekekabic Trail – Grand Marais, MN - Long Distance Hiking Trails on Waymarking.com

These coords take you to the eastern trailhead for the 38 mile long Kekekabic Trail located 47 miles from Grand Marais up the Gunflint Trail. There is a small parking lot for several cars. The western terminus is on Snowbank Road off the Fernberg Road, 18 miles east of Ely. Only foot traffic is permitted on this primitive path which includes rocky ridges, swamps, and cliffs, as well as moss covered and duff walkways. It is maintained by a volunteer group, the Kekekabic Trail Club which clears trails with the support from the U.S. Forest Service.

The first part of the “Kek” Trail dates back to the late 1880’s with the start of the Paulson Mines but didn’t become popular for backpacking until the 1960’s. It meanders through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a popular non-motor area with paddlers; sometimes it crosses well-used portages. The forested and rocky terrain is rugged and demands good physical conditioning, skill, and endurance. It is most comfortably completed in a week but can be done in less time. Campsites are located near lakes where drinking water is accessible. Hikers should wear proper hiking footwear and bring necessary camping gear. Wildlife includes moose, bear, wolves, deer, eagles, porcupine, pine martens, and beaver.

Hikers need to obtain a BWCAW hiking permit and observe all the same wilderness rules that pertain to canoe/campers. All wilderness visitors are asked to Leave No Trace: Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.
