The Walker Art Building was a gift to the College from Harriet and Sophia Walker in honor of their uncle Theophilus Walker, a Boston businessman. It was designed by Charles Follen McKim and completed in 1894. This landmark building exemplifies the architectural and decorative ideals of the late nineteenth century, especially important were the concepts of balance and symmetry. The building features a rotunda and a harmonious use of brick, limestone and granite. The building was designed to clearly indicate its purpose as a museum of art.

The Museum’s façade is inspired by Renaissance architecture with a grand staircase leading to a recessed loggia. Niches on either side of the building hold bronze statues of Sophocles and Demosthenes created by Sabatino de Angelis, a nineteenth-century Italian sculptor who specialized in copying ancient originals. The two large lions that stand guard on either side of the staircase are copies of the lions at the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. The museum was renovated in 1974. The lower level was expanded and a new glass entrance was added to the side of the building.

The Bowdoin College Museum of Art maintains a collection of art that range from ancient Mediterranean cultures to the present day. There are over 18,500 objects in the collection, which includes paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and works on paper. The collection is one of the most comprehensive of any college museum in the United States.
