Die Etsch (italienisch Adige, ladinisch Adesc, bei den Römern Athesis) ist mit ihren 415 km der zweitlängste Fluss in Italien. Sie entspringt im alpinen Raum von Südtirol, durchfließt Oberitalien und mündet in die Adria (Mittelmeer).
Die Etsch entspringt in den Ötztaler Alpen am Reschenpass (1.525 m) in Südtirol, welcher ihr Stromgebiet von dem des Inns scheidet, durchfließt den Reschensee (1.482 m) und den Haidersee und gelangt mit raschem Gefälle auf die Malser Haide und die ebene Talsohle von Glurns. Sie fließt ostwärts weiter durch den Vinschgau, passiert Meran und Bozen. In Meran mündet die Passer in die Etsch.
In der Nähe Bozens fließt ihr der Eisack zu und ab hier abwärts ist sie namensgebend für das rechts ansteigende Überetsch. Die Etsch selbst fließt durch das Südtiroler Unterland und verlässt Südtirol durch die Salurner Klause. In der Nähe Roveretos passiert sie eine Stromenge, kurz vor Verona durchfließt sie eine Klause (die Chiusa di Verona (deutsch veraltet: Berner Klause – siehe dazu Dietrich von Bern). Nach Verona fließt die Etsch in einer Ebene, die flachen Ufer werden nun sumpfig, der Strom selbst schlammig und träge. Der Unterlauf der Etsch ist vielfach mit dem Mündungsgebiet des Po verbunden.
Ein Arm der Etsch zweigt bei Legnago nach Süden zum Tartaro ab und mündet in den Valli Grandi in diesen, ein weiterer Arm verzweigt oberhalb von Castelbaldo nach Süden und fließt als Canale Bianco nach Osten, ist mit dem Po Grande verbunden und fließt schließlich in den Po di Levante. Ein dritter Arm, der Naviglio Adigetto, zweigt bei Badia nach Südosten ab und fließt im Po-Delta diesem zu.
Die Etsch selbst mündet bei Porto Fossone, Provinz Rovigo, in das Adriatische Meer und begrenzt das Po-Delta nach Norden.
Die Etsch verläuft mit 220 km in Südtirol. Ab der Eisackmündung ist der Fluss auf einer Länge von 297 km schiffbar, hier weist er eine Breite von 78 m auf. Bei Verona sind es schon 120 m und weiter unten ist der Hauptarm etwa 260 m breit, die Tiefe des Flusses liegt meist zwischen drei und fünf Metern. Der Höhenunterschied, den sie von der Quelle bis Mals zurücklegt, liegt bei 630 m, weiter bis Meran sind es nochmals 279 m. Bis Legnago liegt ihr Gefälle zwischen 1:510 und 1:1.200, im Unterlauf in der Ebene zwischen 1:6.000 und 1:12.000.
Die Quelle der Etsch ist nicht die beschilderte auf dem Reschenpass, sondern liegt oberhalb des Dorfes Reschen nahe eines Bunkers des Vallo Alpino (Alpenwall).
