The Centennial Trail was developed in 2009 after this overgrown historical railroad route was uncovered by a windstorm and a forest fire. A sign tells what a hiker might expect to find on this 3.3 mile trail.
“All Aboard! You are pulling out on a 3.3 mile trip along the Centennial Trail, dedicated in 2009 to commemorate the Centennial of the Superior National Forest.
“A portion of the trail travels the historic route of the Port Arthur, Duluth and Western Railroad (PAD&W). Take a trail brochure, then look for the station stops marked by numbered sign posts or GPS.
“Historic sites such as the PAD&W and the Paulson Mine remind us of the struggles and accomplishments of bygone eras. They are also susceptible to looting and vandalism.
“This trail has only slight grades except in the section indicated on the map. Use caution at overlooks, on steep grades, and near mine shafts and pits. Do not approach the edges of mine shafts and pits, or of natural drop offs.
“Help preserve this area by leaving no trace: take only pictures, leave only footprints. Remember historic sites are protected by federal laws which make collecting artifacts or damaging sites possible felonies.”
Beneath the text is a map with a legend; each station is marked numerically to correspond with the printed brochure.
Another sign tells more about the history of the PAD&W and the Paulson Mine and is also listed as a waymark.
