Symbolic of Portland's rich maritime tradition is the display in front of the ferry terminal on Commercial Street in Portland. A section of the grassy area between the street and the terminal has been set off by a low wall and partially filled with white sand. On the sand base, a large anchor and the bell chamber of a buoy have been arranged. Both these artifacts are identified with the intimate connection between Portland and its seafaring tradition.
The anchor is most prominently displayed. It's closest to the street and raised at an angle so that the ring is about two feet off the sand with the base resting on he sand.
