The plaque was erected after Josep died on a defensive tower attached to the house where he lived. Josep was a historian, lawyer and politician, who was prominent in the fight to get independence for Catalonia.
Begur is a coastal town that was subject to attacks by pirates in the 16th and 17th centuries. A number of the bigger houses have defensive towers attached to use as a retreat in case of attack.
Appropriately the coat of arms of Begur shows a defensive tower on one half of a shield in remembrance of the days of pirate attacks. Underneath the tower, although not clear in the photo, are wavy lines representing the sea. The left hand side of the shield has vertical narrow lines representing Catlonia. The shield is surmounted by a crown, again this is taken from the Catalonian coat of arms.
