This is the Gate of the Cour d´Honneur (Court of Honnour)of Versailles Palace.
This gate marked the limits of the Versailles Palace untill the end of the XVII century when it was removed (1771).

The original grid was the work of Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1680, a time when the palace was in permanent mutation. The grid was removed in 1771, duringthe last years of Louix XV Reign.

In 1838, an equestrian statue of Louis XIV was installed in it´s place.

The grid and gate were rebuildt between 2005 and 2008. 15 000 tons of iron and 100.000 gold leafs were needed.

A controversy over the return of the grid was born.
The rules of the restoration have want to return to the "last state significant". But for critics of this project, the history of nineteenth-century Versailles century was ignored to return to the state of the seventeenth century century, for no good reason.
Construction required to move the equestrian statue of Louis XIV, placed there on purpose in 1838. This decision is to deny that Versailles has been an important place in the nineteenth century to century, and to disregard the will of King Louis-Philippe.
