War cemetery and memorial of the fallen in the World War I from 1916 in Petrzalka - Kopcany (district of Bratislava, capital of Slovakia).

History and location:
War cemetery was found during the World War I in 1916 as an auxiliary part of a war infirmary where mainly seriously injured soldiers of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy were placed, but also other soldiers of the fighting parts.

In the archive collection of the Military History Institute there are designs of the cemetery from March 1922 deposited, thus there is an assumption that the final works were completed in that year or year before.

Cemetery is located directly by the border between Slovakia and Austria, so it remained in military zone (Iron Curtain) with strictly limited access for 40 years after WWII. Until recent seasons, cemetery turns slowly to desolated condition. Graves were robbed and whole surroundings overgrown by trees and plants.

Just recently, in years 2007-2009 it was reconstructed and revitalized, as shown on current pictures.

Soldiers:
According to the soldiers record sheets it is possible to find out, that at the cemetery, there are 331 soldiers of nine identified nationalities buried in single graves.

Slovak an Czech nationality is not separated, the soldiers have got common Czechoslovak nationality. Nationality of six buried soldiers was not identified.

Nationality and number of buried soldiers:
    Czechoslovak - 122
    Hungarian - 53
    Yugoslavian - 51
    Romanian - 43
    Austrian - 16
    Russian - 15
    Italian - 11
    Polish - 11
    German - 3
Access:
Park at the end of Kopcianska street in Bratislava, Petrzalka and take a field paved road (walk, or by bike) along the border line to cemetery, hidden in nice grove. Walk will take you about 15 minutes. Don't forget to visit also military shelter, which now serves as an museum.

Vojnovy cintorin a pamatnik padlych v 1.svetovej vojne z roku 1916, Petrzalka - Kopcany.

Historia a poloha:

U siestich pochovanych vojakoch nebola identifikovana narodnost.

Narodnost a pocet pochovanych vojakov:
    Ceska a slovenska - 122
    Madarska - 53
    Juhoslovanská - 51
    Rumunská - 43
    Rakuska - 16
    Ruska - 15
    Talianska - 11
    Polska - 11
    Nemecka - 3
Pristup:
Autom na koniec Kopcianskej ulice v Bratislave, dalej pesi/na bicykli smerom k hranici a spevnenou cestou pozdlz nej az k cintorinu. Je ukryty v malebnom hajiku.
