Founded in Jan. of 1997, the American Rock Salt Co. mine was opened for business in 2000, after the Retsof Salt Mine, located 10 miles away had an underground collapse in 1994 due to an earthquake. The American Rock Salt Company purchased 10,000 acres of mineral rights and 200 acres of property. They then secured the necc. permits and broke ground on the new mine in 1998. It opened for business two years later.
