[PT]A cidade de Viana do Castelo celebrou em 1998 a elevação a cidade pela rainha D. Maria II. Este monumento foi inaugurado em 1999 para comemorar os 150 anos da cidade.
O monumento foi colocado num pequno jardim situado entre o histórico forte de Santiago da Barra e o mar.
Na parte de trás do monumento exite uma placa que diz:

"Monumento a Viana do Castelo
Comemorações do Sesquicentenário
Da elevação a cidade por D. Maria II
1848/1998
5-X-1999 Camara Municipal"


[EN] The city of Viana do Castelo celebrated in 1998 the elevation to city by Queen Maria II. This monument was inaugurated in 1999 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the city.
The monument was placed in a small garden located between the historic fort of Santiago da Barra and the sea.
On the back of the monument there is a plaque that says:

"Monument to Viana do Castelo
Commemoration of the Sesquicentennial
of the elevation to city by D. Maria II
1848/1998
5-X-1999 City Hall "


Viana do Castelo:
Viana do Castelo is a municipality and seat of the Viana do Castelo District in the Norte Region of Portugal. The city proper has 36,148 (INE, 2001) inhabitants and the municipality has a total population of 91,238 inhabitants (2006) over a total area of 318.6 km².
It is located at the mouth of the Lima River.
The city has a seaport with naval repairing facilities. Its major industry is naval construction and its shipyard is the only one still working in Portugal.
