It is a wild olive tree, and according to the University of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro, is the oldest tree in Portugal, dethroning thus the olive Pedras d'El Rei, Tavira, which will have 2210 years .

However, the method used to determine the age of the tree Algarve is less credible than the one developed in the last four years, the researchers Transmontano, experts explain. The innovative system, which have already been patented, is based on the analysis of growth patterns of the species, such as height, girth or diameter, while the old method was applied by counting the rings or the technique of measuring the carbon 14 which tends to decrease with time.

The process was directed by professors José Luis Pacheco Marques Lousada and, after a contact manager ornamental trees Andre Soares dos Reis, to estimate the age of this woody plant. The perimeter of the olive tree measured at its base, 10.15 meters and the crown diameter is 7.60 by 8.40 meters. This tree is well into monumental 4.40 meters tall. Still, experts say they believe there is an olive tree in the country's oldest, but whose owner has not agreed to certification.

Yesterday, Saturday, olive Loures was certified in a public ceremony organized by the Association of Environmental Protection and Cultural Heritage of Santa Iria da Azóia
