It might surprise some, that a gambling casino can be found on the shores of the Mekong River, in the developing country of Laos, inside a customs and immigration office, however, let me explain. Thailand is a totally democratic, Buddhist country, with a constitutional monarchy, and which bans gambling in all its forms. Conversely, Laos is a communist republic, which allows gambling in all forms. Add to this, that Thais love gambling and there is clearly a disconnect between demand and supply.
To resolve this gap enterprising folk have constructed huge casino complexes at Thai border crossings. Thus hordes of Thais cross the Mekong River every day, and twice of holidays, to gamble in the towns in Laos (and other neighbouring countries). All with the proper governmental oversight and funding arrangements. Everyone wins.
This neon is not one of the casinos, rather it is a taste of what is to come. It is a combined, pier, for the ferry across the Mekong from the Thai town of Mukdahan, an immigration office, where you day pass can be stamped, and a small gambling den—just in case you need a quick fix before heading to the big casino, 15 minutes away. Free transport provided.
