Die Ostbake -
eine historische Landmarke.
In ihrem Ursprung stammt die Ostbake aus dem Jahr 1635. Sie diente bis in das 20. Jahrhundert den Tonnenlegern zur Orientierung in der Elbmündung.
In der Nacht des 18. Januar 2007 brachte der Orkan 'Kyrill' die Bake zu Fall. Durch intensive Bemühungen verschiedener Seiten konnte erreicht werden, daß der Hamburger Senat die Bake als kulturhostorisches Wahrzeichen der Insel im Herbst 2009 mit der ursprünglichen Höhe von etwa 25m wieder errichten ließ.

The 'Ostbake' - Eastern Beacon
a historic landmark
Originally the Eastbeacon was erected in 1635. The trinity house tenders of the Elbe estuary used this beacon for terrestrial navigation till the 20th century.
On the night of the 18th January 2007 the storm 'Kyrill' brought the beacon down. It took a lot of efford of several groups to get the Senat of the City of Hamburg to acknowledge the Eastbeacon as a historical landmark of the Island of Neuwerk. The 25m wooden beacon was reerrected in autumn 2009.
