The University of Algarve is a young state university located in the southeastern part of Portugal. It was established in 1979 and over the years the institution has acquired a sound international reputation.

The University has witnessed significant growth in terms of its student population, modern facilities and the quality and diversity of programmes on offer. The University’s student population is close to 10 000 and employs over 700 academics. It has three faculties (Science and Thecnology, Human and Social Sciences and Economics)and four schools (Education and Comunication, Hotel Management and Tourism, Health and Enginierings), offering a range of quality undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a beautiful academic setting. It is an important centre for cultural, scientific and technological development, with strong regional, national and international ties, offering students the opportunity to explore various careers as they gain transferable skills.

The University of Algarve is particularly well-known for its marine biology, marine sciences and biochemistry degrees , offered by its Sciences & Technology Faculty.

The Hotel Management and Tourism School (Escola Superior de Gestão, Hotelaria e Turismo) was established in 1988 when the former Thecnology and Management School (Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão)was splited in two (Management to one side and Thecnology to another), is part of the Algarve University and works in the Campus of Portimão (and Gambelas in Faro) offering the following courses:

As a curiosity, the School building is a former slaughterhouse. It was owned by the local city hall and adapted in the 1990´s.
