This small pioneer cemetery in rural Oregon is an unlikely resting place for a veteran of The Revolutionary War. William Cannon not only fought in The Revolutionary War but served later as a soldier at a frontier outpost called Fort Mackinac located where lakes Huron and Michigan meet. As a member of John Jacob Astor’s overland party he was part of the first group of pioneer trappers to travel from New York State to Oregon along the route that would later become part of the Oregon Trail. In May of 1843 he voted in favor of an American government in the 52 to 50 vote that gave The United States provisional governmental power over the area.
