Outside historic Grand Traverse Courthouse a short way from a zinc Civil War monument, a cannon, a time capsule, a Spanish-American and World War I monuments is a lone statue celebrating the friendship between Mtskheta Georgia and Grand Traverse.

Traverse City residents took their first trip as part of the sister-city delegation to Georgia in 1989.

"Originally, we were just trying to develop some ties with a communist country at the time to see if there's some way we could get those people to see how we live and see how they live," Joe Muha said. "Kind of ease international tensions, so to speak."
