These typical salt barns can be found all over Northwest Switzerland along the Rhine. Saltworks started in the 1830s in the area and is going on until today. The halite deposits are in a depth of about 400 meters under ground, sometimes less.

The process is still the same. After the holes are drilled, fresh water is pressed in the ground and the saturated brine pumped up. Then the brine is evaporated (heated) and what's left is the salt.

Current saltworks look just like normal factories. At the pumping places there is nothing more to see than large manholes. But many of these salt barns have been preserved. This group of salt barns is located in an area east of Pratteln called "Salina Raurica". It has two drill towers and four barns for the ovens to evaporate the brine. There are some signs with some history and old pictures at the road.
