Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn, Europe's first cog railway from 1871, was based in the canton Luzern and they did not have a license for a railway line in the canton Schwyz where the summit of the mountain is located, so they line had to stop at Rigi-Staffelhöhe at the canton border.
In 1873 a Schwyz based company - Arth-Rigi-Bahn - built the line from Rigi-Staffelhöhe to Rigi Kulm, only about 200 meters from the mountain summit and leased the tracks to Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn. In 1875 they completed the line from Rigi-Staffelhöhe to Arth-Goldau north of the mountain and added an additional track from Rigi-Staffelhöhe to Rigi Kulm.
This state did last until 1992, when the two companies merged into "Rigi-Bahnen". But still today they have independent tracks side by side. The trains from Vitznau are red, the ones from Arth are blue.
The original station building from the 19th century does not exist anymore; the current one is probably from the period when the companies merged.
