The Champasak province of Laos is located in south west of the country, abutting both the Thailand and Cambodian borders. The only city in the province is the pleasant city of Pakse, located on the Mekong River. This city is the seat of government for the province. The population is approximately 500,000.

Near the city centre, and just off the Mekong, is the governor's offices. From the here the despatches of the central government in far off Vientiane are carried out, and the general business of administering the lives of the citizens of the province implemented. The waymark was made at the front wall sign.

There is little public information as to the details of the structure of the Laos government, however, each of the sixteen provinces (khoueng) is directed by an party committee, chaired by a party secretary, who is the dominant political figure in the province. The provincial government is appointed by and responsible to the central government. There is no provincial legislature. While there is a national election, to elect a national legislature, power is reserved to the central committee and politburo of the Laos Communist Party (Lao People's Revolutionary Party - LPRP).

The name of the province derives from the small town of Champasak to the south of Pakse. In days gone by, this city was a kingdom in its own right, but now a major tourist destination as it adjoins the Kymer era Wat Champasak.
