The monastery was founded in 1193 by blessed Hroznata, It survived Hussite wars and Thirty-Year War (although it has been plundered by Swedish army in 1641 and 1648).
The monastery was active in the life of West Bohemia region: promoting progressive agriculture methods, maintaining several schools, supporting natural sciences, and the well known spa town of Marienbad was founded by the local abbot Karl Reitenberger. A large library was built in 1906 - currently it is keeping about 70000 volumes.
After WW II, the German members of the order were forced to move to Bavaria, and in 1950 the monastery was closed down and until 1978 it was used as by the army. In 1990 it was returned to the Praemonstratensian order.
Currently the monastery buildings are being repaired and there is an archaelogical survey going on. There are guided tours available to public year round, the entrance is 100 CZK for adults.
