John Robert Mortimer (1825-1911) was a nineteenth-century pioneer of modern British archaeology.

He amassed a collection of cultural material which was displayed, from 1878 until his death in 1911, in this building, the Mortimer museum. After his death it was moved to the City of Hull, where it now forms the nucleus of the East Riding Museum of Archaeology.

The building is now a masonic lodge, and is a grade II listed building.
