"Motivem ochrany na území národní prírodní rezervace Polanská niva jsou lužní lesy svazu Alnion incanae (asociace Pruno-Fraxinetum, Querco-Ulmetum) ovlivnené karpatskou kvetenou, spolecenstva vodních rostlin rybníku a starých ramen Odry. Území má výmeru 122,3 ha. Leží v nadmorské výšce 218–220 m (dno Odry 213 m) v katastrálním území Polanka nad Odrou. Bylo vyhlášeno v roce 1969.

Báze je tvorena metamorfity spodnoproterozoického stárí a na ne nasedajícím paleozoikem (produktivní karbon). Tyto komplexy jsou prekryty sedimenty miocenní karpatské predhlubne. Dvojí pleistocenní zalednení a období poté prineslo sedimenty glacilakustrinních písku a jílu, fluviální šterky a písky, jež jsou prekryty mladoholocenními povodnovými hlínami.

Témer tretinu rezervace tvorí lužní lesy, ovlivnené výrazne karpatskou kvetenou. Základními drevinami jsou jasan (Fraxinus excelsior), lípa malolistá (Tilia cordata) a dub letní (Quercus robur) s prímesí stremchy obecné (Prunus padus). Kerové patro je pestré. Nejhojnejší jsou v nem brslen evropský (Euonymus europaeus) a stremcha obecná. Velmi bohaté bylinné patro je nejlépe zapojené v jarním aspektu s hojným výskytem sneženky predjarní (Galanthus nivalis) a cesneku medvedího (Allium ursinum).

Na vodních plochách rybníku lemovaných rákosinami spatríme kotvici plovoucí (Trapa natans), nepukalku plovoucí (Salvinia natans), rdest svetlý (Potamogeton lucens). Na letnených rybnících je hojný myší ocásek nejmenší (Myosurus minimus) vzácne nalezneme úpor kurickovitý (Elatine alsinastrum) a skrípinu korenující (Scirpus radicans).

Složení fauny v rezervaci je velmi pestré. V periodických tuních žije vzácná žábronožka snežní (Siphonophanes grubii). Pruzkumy prokázaly široké zastoupení mekkýšu, brouku a jiných. bezobratlých.

Na rybnících se vyskytují velmi silné populace obojživelníku, zvlášte skokan skrehotavý (Rana ridibunda), skokan zelený (Rana esculenta), kunka ohnivá (Bombina bombina) a rosnicka zelená (Hyla arborea). Z ptáku zde hnízdí napríklad bukácek malý (Ixobrychus minutus), círka modrá (Anas querquedula), hohol severní (Bucephala clangula), chrástal vodní (Rallus aquaticus), potápka malá (Podiceps ruficollis) a potápka rohác (Podiceps cristatus).

V rezervaci žijí rovnež vzácné a ohrožené druhy savcu, napríklad netopýr vodní (Myotis daubentoni), n. stromový (Nyctalus leisleri), n. parkový (Pipistrellus nathusii), hraboš mokradní (Microtus agrestis), podél Odry migruje vydra rícní (Lutra lutra) a bobr evropský (Castor fiber).

Rozloha lesu národní prírodní rezervace je 50 ha. Stromové patro je témer stejnoveké (cca 100 let) a do porostu nebylo v posledních desetiletích úmyslne zasahováno.

Rezervace je soucástí nadregionálního biocentra Oderská niva a soucástí Evropsky významné lokality a Ptací oblasti Poodrí. Soucasne se však nachází na okraji Ostravy – tretího nejvetšího mesta v CR, a je tedy vystavena znacnému návštevnickému tlaku.

Prvotním úcelem rezervace je ochrana mimorádných prírodních hodnot a využívání území pro výzkum a vzdelávání."

EN: There are two basic types of nature areas protected by the state in the Czech republic. Large territories are protected as national parks and protected lanscape areas, smaller territories are protected as nature reserves and monuments. Both types are established by the state – either by the government and parliament or by the Ministry of the Environment.

"The subject of the protection in Polanská niva national nature reserve is the alluvial forests of the Alnion incanae alliance(Pruno-Fraxinetum, Querco-Ulmetum associations) which are influenced by Carpathian flora and communities of aquatic plants of the fishponds and oxbow lakes of the Odra river. Polanská niva (alluvial plain) NNR was declared in 1969 on an area of 122.3 ha and lies at elevations of 218 – 220 metres above sea level (Odra riverbed 213 m), in the parish of Polanka nad Odrou in the Moravskoslezský kraj – Moravian-Silesian Region.

The geological basement is formed of metamorphic rocks of Lower Proterozoic age and the overlying Paleozoic rocks (coal-bearing Carboniferous sediments). These complexes are covered by sediments of the Miocene Carpathian foredeep. The two Pleistocene glaciations and the following period brought glacio-lacustrine sands and clays, fluvial gravels and sands which are covered by Late Holocene flood-plain loams.

Approximately one third of the reserve is covered with alluvial forest stands which are significantly influenced by Carpathian flora. The predominant tree species are ash (Fraxinus excelsior), small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) and pendunculate oak (Quercus robur), with bird cherry (Prunus padus) also in the mixture. The shrub layer is a rich one with spindle tree (Euonymus europaeus) and bird cherry. The very rich herb layer looks best in the spring with rich populations of snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) and ramsons (Allium ursinum).

On the water surface of the fishponds which are surrounded by reedbeds we can see water chestnut (Trapa natans), F4017 eared water-moss (Salvinia natans), shining pondweed (Potamogeton lucens). On the beds of the fishponds when they are drained in summer the mousetail (Myosurus minimus) is common, but we can occasionally find waterwort (Elatine alsinastrum) and the club-rush Scirpus radicans here too.

The fauna composition in the reserve demonstrates great diversity. The rare North European fairy shrimp Siphonophanes grubii lives in the periodic pools. Research has also proven the great diversity in the mollusc, beetle and invertebrate populations.

Very strong amphibian populations are found around the ponds, especially of marsh frog (Rana ridibunda), edible frog (Rana esculenta), European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) and common tree-frog (Hyla arborea). Birds which nest here include little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), garganey (Anas querquedula), goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), water rail (Rallus aquaticus), little grebe (Podiceps ruficollis) and great-crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus).

Rare and endangered mammal species also live in the reserve including Daubenton’s bat (Myotis daubentoni), Liesler’s bat (Nyctalus leisleri), and Nathusius‘ pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii). The field vole (Microtus agrestis) lives in the reserve and European beaver (Castor fiber) and otter (Lutra lutra) migrate along the Odra river."
