Quinta das Lágrimas is a well know estate, famous for having been the scene of the love of Prince D. Pedro (future D. Pedro I of Portugal) and D. Inês de Castro.
Here are located the Fonte dos Amores (Foutain of Love) and the Fonte das Lágrimas (Fountain of Tears).
The designation of "Fonte dos Amores" is due to that, this place witnessed the love of D. Pedro, grandson of the holy Queen, by D. Inês, who served as chaperone to the wife of D. Pedro, D. Constança.
According to the legend, the name "Fonte das Lágrimas" is originated in the tears shed by Inês de Castro when she was killed, having been baptized by Luis de Camões.
Right next to the fountain, the following strophe was etched in stone:
"As filhas do Mondego, a morte escura
Longo tempo chorando memoraram
E por memória eterna em fonte pura
As Lágrimas choradas transformaram
O nome lhe puseram que ainda dura
Dos amores de Inês que ali passaram
Vede que fresca fonte rega as flores
Que as Lágrimas são água e o nome amores"
Os Lusíadas, canto III.
«Os Lusíadas, usually translated as The Lusiads, is a Portuguese epic poem by Luís Vaz de Camões.
Written in Homeric fashion, the poem focuses mainly on a fantastical interpretation of the Portuguese voyages of discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries. Os Lusíadas is often regarded as Portugal's national epic.»
