This statue of Diana The Huntress in front of Cartwright Hall, in Lister Park in Bradford is a replica of Diana of Versailles, a 2nd Century marble statue in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

According to Wikipedia, in Roman Mythology, Diana was the goddess of the hunt and moon, with the power to control and talk to animals. She was known as the virgin goddess and looked after virgins and women. She is usually portrayed as a huntress with a bow. In another common theme she is shown with a quiver of arrows, and a stag or, as in this statue, a hind. (

The original statue was made of marble, found in Italy and given to King Henry II of France by Pope Paul IV. Since 1798 it has been housed in the Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities, Sully, ground floor, room 17 in the Louvre Museum.
The replica bronze statue was made in 1904 to be the centre piece of a formal garden in front of Cartwright Hall, built as an art gallery, designed to look like an old English Stately Home.
The statue was originally painted white, presumable to look like the statue in the Louvre. However between 1998 and 2002 the whole park underwent major refurbishment and renovation. As part of this work the paint was removed from the statue to reveal the bronze below.
