In Boston, on the main campus of Northeastern University, is the Centennial Common, a place where people pass through from all directions. This common has a stone monument in the center states that this portion is called Centennial Circle and has a list of those who contributed. To the left is the logo for Northeastern University. To the right is the logo for the Northeastern University Centennial Campaign, with a 100 incorporated into the logo.
Northeastern University was first evening courses offered by the YMCA in Boston (the first American branch), named the Evening Institute for Younger Men. Originally organized in May 1896, the first class, in law, started on October 3, 1898. Classes for the Automobile School started in 1903, offered to both women and men. The School for Business and Commerce started in 1907. Northeastern became a college in 1916. In 1922, the name was changed to Northeastern University of the Young Men's Christian Association. Northeastern became completely separate from the YMCA in 1948. Today, Northeastern University is one of the largest private universities in the country and conducts research in many fields.
