Felix O’Hara traverse en Amérique alors qu’il est dans la vingtaine. Enrôlé dans l’armé, il arrive en Nouvelle-Angleterre à l’époque où celle-ci prépare l’invasion de la Nouvelle-France. Ses supérieurs le cantonnent à New York où il fait la connaissance de Martha Mc Cormick qu’il épouse en 1760. À ce moment, il a vingt-huit ans et les hostilités avec la colonie française sont terminées. O’Hara quitte alors les rangs de l’armée, même si la paix n’est pas encore signée entre la France et l’Angleterre, ce qui est fait avec la ratification du Traité de Paris en 1763. La porte de ce qui était la Nouvelle-France est désormais ouverte aux Britanniques.
Felix O’Hara fait sans doute partie des quelques deux cents marchands qui accompagnent l’armée anglaise dans ce territoire nouvellement conquis. En 1765, O’Hara apparaît dans le recensement de Montréal. En fait, les fonctionnaires inscrivent sa propriété, mais celle-ci ne semble pas habitée. Son propriétaire venait de quitter Montréal dans les semaines, sinon dans les jours précédents, pour s’installer en Gaspésie avec toute sa famille. Il est même possible de croire qu’il est venu en région avec son ami et voisin Edward Manwarin. En effet, les deux hommes réapparaissent dans les documents officiels en même temps à Gaspé cet été là.

Felix O'Hara across America when he was in his twenties. Enlisted in the army, he arrived in New England at the time it prepares the invasion of New France.
