Believed to have been built in the 1830's this plantation was home to Louisiana Governor Edward Douglass White, the Chief Justices' father. Chief Justice White was born in 1845 at this home and was raised here until he went to Georgetown University. He returned during the American Civil War and moved to New Orleans with his mother. He moved back after the war, and began his legal studies. He went on to University of Louisiana,(Tulane University) to complete his study of the law at what is now known as the Tulane University Law School. He was appointed a Justice to the US Supreme Court in 1894, and was made Chief Justice in 1910, where he served until his death in 1921.
The home is a raised Creole plantation, listed as a National Landmark. It is a FREE self tour, of bioth the home and the grounds. In fine restored condition, Chief Justice White is also the highest "ranking" political figure to ever come from Louisiana.
There is also a plaque located inside the visitor center, that also verifies this as the Childhood Home of Chief Justice White. (see pics).
