The A686 road goes from Melmerby To Alston and up to Hartside Summit. At the summit there is a cafe that keeps poor opening hours and closes at the early time of 1700hrs regardless of the time of year. There are excellent views from the cafe car park given the caveat that the clouds are not obscuring them. If driving be aware that cyclists use the road and can be a bit "wobbly" towards the summit.
