The city of Pakse is the largest city and provincial capital of the southern Laos province of Champasak. Adjacent to the provincial museum is the provincial library.

Due to a marked absence of spoken English (and my lack of Laotian language skills), little direct communication was possible, however I was able to glean some information from the library contents. The library was founded on March 23, 2004, with assistance from the 'Library of Laos' project based in West Milwaukee (there is a website, but at this date showed no useful information: librarylaos.org). The official name of the library seems to be 'Worley/Engelken Library".

In size the library is rather small, one central area surrounded by book shelves. When I visited there was a rather serious looking meeting underway in this central open space (men in suits), so I was not able to browse the books on display. On the outer part of the library were books and magazines in Laotian, Thai and English.

The people inside were rather surprised to see me. Only a handful of westerners visit this region, and most of these do not visit libraries.
