Way up high in the mountains stands sentinel, this Smokey Bear, watching vigilantly over his forest and state park. The Appalachian Trail passes right over this part of Route 40/National Road, just in front of Smokey. Today (August 10, 2011), the chance of fire danger was low. The caption underneath the bear reads Prevent Forest Fires. The sign was placed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service.
