Champasak is one of the southern provinces of Laos, with a number of interesting tourist spots to be seen. On the eastern edge of the capital and largest city in the province, Pakse (aka Pakxe), is the provincial museum. There is no information available concerning the museum building, but it looks to be a 'grand old building', most likely constructed by the French during their period of rule. Located on the main road leading out of the city.
The building has two stories. The first is devoted to the history and pre-history of the region, with a number of artefacts, and many photographs. The upper story describes the more recent history of Laos, from the time of the revolutionary struggle against US imperialism (no mention of Australian imperialism) to the much improved present.
Approximately 75% or more of the exhibits are photographs or reproductions. There was a seemingly arbitrary photograph policy, essentially, a chap followed me around saying "ok" or "no" (not a huge amount of spoken English in southern Laos). I was also the only visitor in the museum, and I suspect, the only recent visitor. Perhaps not the greatest museum to be seen, but worth a look. Entry to the museum is 10,000 Kip, ~$1.20.
Theme: Laos social and political history. Emphasis on contemporary history.
