La Torre del Oro is a is a dodecagonal military watchtower in Seville. It was part of the walls of the Alcázar as advanced and final tower served as a bulwark to defend the port and bridge. It had a heavy chain across the river, closing the port.
The Tower has three bodies, the first two dodecagonal being the highest a cylinder topped with a dome (This one was built in 1760).
The Navy has played an important role in conservation. A proposal by the Board of the Naval Museum, the March 21, 1936 provided for the installation of the Maritime Museum in the Torre del Oro, by order of the Admiralty. In September 1942 work began on restoration, which improves the appearance of the facade, preparing the ground and first floors as exhibition rooms of the museum. The third floor is enabled for housing researchers, was inaugurated on July 24, 1944 by D. Julio Guillen. He proclaimed that "La Torre del Oro, the most characteristic feature of Seville, is no longer an empty and abandoned shell by the river, and, this museum, small in size and modest in materials will give it new horizons" .
The museum collection was enriched with 400 pieces brough from Madrid Naval Museum.
With an exhibition area of ??633 m2, the museum contains numerous examples of technical and historical value (both military and civilian) related closely the river, Seville and the sea. Three inseparable elements.
Among the exhibits are depicted the Renaissance, romantic, classical, historical, epigraphic and Baroque styles. The Museum is fully installed in the ground and first floors. Each floor is a room and there is no separation from her collection, even though it has tried to maintain an expository, taking into account the limitations of existing space.
Stand out as unique collections, portraits of famous sailors, lanterns, masks, defenses of the port of Seville and engravings, old photographs, pottery, pieces seafaring, fishing-related, etc, all forming a diverse collection.
