"This hand operated water pump is located in historic fortress island of Svartholm. Svartholm fortress was build by the Swedes in 1750's as link of defence fortresses of Swedes empire. It is a similar type of fortress as Suomenlinna in Helsinki. Swede period last some time and after that Russians rule begun in early 1800. Russians used the island as a prison. In 1855 during the Crimean War some English squadron blew the fortress and it was left as it was and it fell into ruin. From the 1960s the fortress has been restored under the direction of the National Board of Antiquities. Major repairs were completed in time to celebrate Svartholma's 250th anniversary in 1998."
