Members of the congregation designed and built the monument which rests on the church's front lawn. Instead of names, gold stars represent the American men and women killed. In front of the 18-foot-wide panel is a grouping of rocks, designed to visually represent the thousands of unnamed Iraqis killed in the war. In previous wars, like WW I or WW II, there was a unifying sense of sacrifice that the entire country shared. That shared sense of loss seems less evident today.
"I think in our age, it's very easy to let the war take place in a way that just slips by your daily life. And I think people will stop ideally and pause and maybe take a moment of reflection on the lives that have been lost. And I think that's just one way to say -we are in the middle of a war time and that's a sober place to be if you're a person of faith or a person of conscience."
--Steve Wilson is Minister of Rutland's Unitarian Universalist Church
