Cafe Chez Boune has been in existence for at least a decade, providing the best of European and some Thai/Lao cooking in southern Laos. Originally, the restaurant was operated by an expat French woman, assisited by her younger Laos boyfriend. On this visit the woman was not to be seen, and her boyfriend, looking older, is managing the place.
The food and drinks served are tasty, a mix of styles, but little vegetarian, though made to order is available. The lack of veg options reduces the restaurant from a 4 star to 3. The restaurant is located at the town centre, back from the Mekong River. There is distinctive and larger than life statue of a penquin at the entrance to the cafe.
I have never seen the cafe crowded. The prices for a meal here, $5-10 or so, is several days wage for the average local. Customers are the local meritocray (or at least plutocracy), some of the few expats, some Thais from across the Mekong, and a few wandering tourists.
Expect to see a few beggars ask you for change through the open front windows (sit towards the back),
