Katharinenkirche is dedicated to the martyred early Christian saint, Catherine of Alexandria. It is located in the city centre at the entrance to The Zeil.

The church was built between 1678 and 1681 in Baroque style after an earlier church on the site demolished. The site was built on low just east of a remaining part of the medieval city wall Staufenmauer. This led to the west facade was to lie right next to the wall, so the architect Melchior Hessler choosed instead to make the Church’s north side to the main facade, and he was placed there a 54-meter high square tower, which until the beginning of the 1900s was Frankfurt’s second tallest construction. The structure of Katharinenkirche is a single nave hall church, basically Baroque but with some features borrowed from the Gothic period.

The church was destroyed during the 1944 bombing and all the rich Baroque interiors were destroyed as well. The reconstruction of the church lasted from 1950 to 1954 and the exterior was restored to its
appearance before the Second World War. The interior, however, was highly simplified.

St. Catherine’s Church is used by the Evangelical Lutheran and is home to a parish church for city work. Worship services are available at Sundays 10 am. Monday to Friday at 17:30 a short prayer is held. It has an ornamental tower with a lantern on the top, and a beamed hall. The Goethe family also went to the St. Catherine’s Church for the service, and Johann was known to spend time in the church’s library reading Greek philosophy.
