Grand Gulf Military Park commemorates one of those under appreciated battles fought during the American Civil War that was one small step in a much larger campaign. About a quarter of the way around the drive through the park, just above the cemetery is the observation tower. Parking is available at the site, a short walk allows one to climb the steps to the top.
Unfortunately, since the tower was erected decades ago, the trees near the tower have continued to grow, and today obscure any view of the surrounding terrain. Still, one can catch a glimpse of the Mississippi River and almost visualize the Yankee gunboats as the approached the Confederate fortifications in the early morning hours of April 29. 1863.
