Armenians started coming to Dhaka in the late 17 century as merchants and traders although in the Indian subcontinent their presence dates back to the 12th century. They were mainly engaged in the city's muslin trade and they were the biggest buyers of the city's famous cloth. Towards the middle of the 19th century, a few dozen Armenian families lived in Old Dhaka and because of their close ties to the British they became rich landlords. The church was built in 1771 and the surrounding neighborhood was called Armanitola. Today the church is a rare oasis of peace and tranquility in the busy Old Dhaka but masses are held only on Easter and Christmas. A cemetery houses the graves of many Armenians who died in Dhaka. When Mother Teresa visited Dhaka just after the Liberation War in the 70s, she stayed here while she opened an orphanage for the rape victims of the war.
