Originally named Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo served as a mission church for nearly seventy years. Construction began in 1724. In 1793, Spanish officials secularized San Antonio's five missions and distributed their lands to Indian residents.
The Alamo played a critical role in the battle for Texas independence. In December 1835, Texan and Tejano volunteers occupied the Alamo and strengthened its defenses. On February 23, 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army arrived outside San Antonio and laid siege to the Alamo. The Texans and Tejanos prepared to defended the Alamo for 13 days under the command of William B. Travis. Among the Alamo's defenders were Jim Bowie, renowned knife fighter, and David Crockett, famed frontiersman and former congressman from Tennessee.
The final assault came before dawn on March 6, 1836. Mexicans scaled the walls and rushed into the compound and overwhelmed the defenders. The defence of the Alamo became the rallying cry for recruiting volunteers to battle for Texas independence.
