Since the first Tinkerbell movie was released, our daughter has been fascinated by fairies. Last year, we built a fairy house using "lost things" from around the house in the construction and it turned out beautifully. Recently, we found a fairy door, brought it home with us, painted it and decorated it and hung it in her room. Most everyday, when she finds something that she thinks would be useful to the fairies (ie. rubberbands, buttons, flowers, small candies, pennies, stones, etc.) she leaves them on the doorstep and every once in a while, a fairy comes to her room, picks the gifts up and leaves her a thank you note. It has become something which brings us much joy in our home :)
This cottage was meant to bring joy to geocachers and waymarkers of all ages. When visiting this cottage, please be respectful of it. We have put forth a great amount of time and effort in creating it and have put a lot of heart into making it very detailed, realistic, and cheerful. We hope it brings a smile to your face and we hope you might catch a glimpse of a fairy here.
Also, please leave the cottage exactly as you found it so that those who follow may enjoy it as well. Feel free to trade a gift (no food please), trinket, or trackable for the fairies but please do NOT remove or break anything from the cottage that is attached to it. If you wish, you are also welcome to take photos here and post them with your log. We would love to see you enjoying the cottage!
This is how we created the fairy cottage. We had some extra wood so I found a pattern online, modified it a little and drew it out on the wood. My husband cut it out for me with his new jigsaw and away we went! The first night, I spent several hours sanding the edges down nice and smooth. The next day, the kids and I went to Hobby Lobby to pick up some stones and some hinges and a clasp for the door and some moss for the roof and some Goop! :) We came home and I rusted the hinges a little (it's nice to have a recipe for rusting things quickly) and the kids helped me glue the stones all over it. I spray painted the door with textured brown spray paint and after it dried, I scratched at it until it looked like real tree bark type wood. I had some more clock faces in my craft box so I glued one on the front of the door with a felt flower and also hung a rusty jingle bell by the door as a doorbell. I added some more accents here and there such as flowers, a starfish, and a welcome sign above the door. I also added a stone chimney after I covered the roof with the moss, and ivy. There are special details on the inside as well including a fireplace but you will have to visit the cottage to see it for yourself. A few days later, it was ready to be placed in the woods! We are so proud of how this Fairy Cottage turned out and hope that it brings joy to everyone who visits here! :)
