At the front of the sculpture is a plaque that reads:

INUVIK
Officially Opened By
The Right Honourable John G. Diefenbaker, P.C., M.P.
- Prime Minister of Canada -
July 21, 1961.

This was the first community north of the Arctic Circle built
to provide the normal facilities of a Canadian town. It was
designed not only as a base for development and administration,
but as a centre to bring education, medical care and new
opportunities to the people of the Western Arctic.

On the back of the sculpture is a plaque with the territorial crest of the Northwest Territories and the following text:

This sculpture, symbolic of the
cooperation of three races in this
community and in the north, was
erected by the Government of the
Northwest Territories in honour of
the official opening of Inuvik. The
opening ceremony was performed by
The Right Honourable
John. G. Diefenbaker, P.C., M.P.,
who was the first Prime Minister
to visit any part of Canada North
of the Arctic Circle.
