The Bryggen is the old wharf area of Bergen. This was an important port of the Hanseatic League, a Northern European trading alliance from the 14th to the mid-16th century.
The city of Bergen was founded in 1070 and Bryggen is the oldest part of the city. Commercial buildings line the wharf on the eastern side of the fjord. The buildings of Bryggen were used by Hanseatic merchants as warehouses to store various merchandise, particularly fish from northern Norway and grain from the lower part of Europe.
Over the years, fire has consumed most of the original structures. The earliest buildings along in Bryggen were reconstructed in 1702, the rest were reconstructed later. The image on the stamp and in the photo show some of the buildings that were not destroyed in a fire that swept through Bryggen in 1955. Today, Bryggen is home to souvenir and gift shops, restaurants, pubs and a museum.
The stamp was issued by Norway in 2006 as part of a six stamp set depicting tourist destinations.
