Chaves O TE é uma cidade portuguesa do Distrito de Vila Real, Região Norte, sub-região do Alto Trás-os-Montes, com uma população estimada (em 2005) de 17 535 habitantes no seu perímetro periurbano. A cidade de Chaves em sentido restrito está dividida em três freguesias: Madalena, Santa Maria Maior e Santa Cruz - Trindade.
É sede de um município com 591,22 km² de área e 44 039 habitantes (2008), subdividido em 51 freguesias. O município é limitado a norte pela Espanha, leste pelo município de Vinhais, a sudeste por Valpaços, a sudoeste por Vila Pouca de Aguiar e a oeste por Boticas e Montalegre.

Chaves is a city and municipality whit an area of 591.3 km² situated in the northern Portugal and 10 km south of the Spanish border. The municipality is the second most populous of the old district of Vila Real (the district capital, Vila Real, is south). Its origins are the Roman civitas Aquæ Flaviæ, and has developed into a population of 44,186 (2004), of which, 17,535 are residents of the urbanized town of Chaves.
