Durante o período romano, Chaves era um dos mais importantes núcleos urbanos da península, havendo notícia de que, à época das invasões suevas no noroeste transmontano, a cidade era sede de um bispado cristão. No entanto, o templo primitivo teria sido praticamente arrasado, e na época da ocupação árabe, a diocese foi extinta e o templo designado sede de paróquia.
As primeiras referências documentais à igreja de Santa Maria Maior surgem nas Inquirições Afonsinas de 1259. O templo românico terá sido construído possivelmente no século XII, sobre as fundações da época visigótica. Da estrutura medieval subsistem ainda a torre sineira e o seu portal.
No reinado de D. João III foi feita uma grande reforma edificativa, que integrou na estrutura românica das fachadas dois magníficos portais renascentistas.
Os dois apresentam uma estrutura semelhante, de linhas sóbrias inspiradas na tratadística italiana, em que um arco de volta perfeita se rasga ladeado por colunelos e inserido num frontão de remate triangular. O portal lateral, atribuído ao pedreiro-escultor João Noblé, destaca-se pela decoração repleta de motivos de grutesco , possuindo esculpidos no extradorso do arco os bustos de São Pedro e São Paulo.
O espaço interior conserva a primitiva estrutura medieval, dividindo-se em três naves marcadas por robustos pilares, cobertas por tecto de madeira edificado no século XIX, uma vez que originalmente a cobertura era feita por abóbadas de canhão.
Antecedendo a capela-mor, dispõem-se duas capelas. À direita a Capela do Santíssimo, edificada no século XVI e reconstruída em meados de Setecentos, com tecto abobadado rematado por lanternim. No espaço fronteiro, a capela é dedicada a Santa Maria, atrás da qual se situa a sacristia.
A capela-mor terá sido reedificada já na segunda metade do século XVI, cerca de 1561, a expensas do licenciado Domingos Gonçalves. Abrindo com um arco triunfal ogival encimado por painel de azulejos, alusivo à Assunção de Maria, é coberta por abóbada polinervada, apoiada em mísulas.

The first documentary references to the church of Santa Maria Maior come in the Alphonsine Inquiries in 1259. The Romanesque temple has been built possibly in the twelfth century on the foundations of one of Visigothic origin. From the medieval structure it still remains the bell tower and its portal.
During the reign of João III was made a major reform, which incorporated in the facades of Romanesque structure two beautiful Renaissance portals.
The two have a similar structure, clean lines inspired by the Italian tratadística, where a round arch flanked by small columns is torn and placed in a triangular pediment shot. The lateral portal, attributed to the mason and sculptor João Noble, stands out for the sake of decoration full of grotesque, possessing the extrados of the arch carved busts of St. Peter and St. Paul.
The interior preserves the original medieval structure, divided into three aisles marked by robust pillars, covered with wooden roof built in the XIX century, since the cover was originally made ??by barrel vaults.
The main chapel has been rebuilt in the second half of the sixteenth century, about 1561, at the expense of the licensee Domingos Goncalves. Opening with a triumphal arch surmounted by an ogival tile panel, depicting the Assumption of Mary, is covered by a vault, supported on corbels.
