A national monument since March 22, 1938, there were various adversities that reigned in the history of the Castle of Chaves. What remains of it is the Torre de Menagem that remains as a living history of troubled times of the Christian reconquest of dowry to resolve real political problems between the various Spanish and Lusitanian. With D. Afonso Henriques, who is joining Chaves to Portuguese territory, was granted a charter in 1258 by order of D. Afonso III, who married in D. Switches Illegitimate daughter of Beatrice D. Alfonso X of Castile. With the elevation to a town charter that gave him, devoting Chaves as a core population, economic and strategic defense line in the borders of Portuguese territory, urged the necessity of rebuilding the castle and a dungeon by the time of the reign of D . Dinis.
Outside, we built a garden, where some parts are exposed to the Museum of Flaviense Region. The garden is bordered by walls built during the fortification of the village, around the time of the Wars of Restoration. The site can see an excellent overview of the whole valley of Chaves.
