The cannery was built in 1907 as a fruit and vegetable canning plant for the California Fruit Packers Association.By 1909 it was the largest plant in the world. It had a 200,000 hand-soldered cans per day and employing 2,500 people. California Fruit Packers Association's name was later changed to Del Monte.
Canning stop in the 1`930s after the Great Depression. In the 1960s, it was saved from demolition. The cannery is now a mix of restaurant and shops and is an important part of Fisherman's Wharf.
