The jetty was originally built in 1881, and extended in 1883 out to a total length of 1680 meters, or 5500 ft, or 1.05 miles. Through the years, the pier has suffered arson and decay, leaving it at it's current length of 1532 meters.
The pier was built for loading and unloading grain on ships out in the main channel of Spencer Gulf, which was hauled to Port Germein from all over South Australia. The depth of the water at low tide at Port Germein is only about knee deep at 1 km from shore, so obviously ships could not come in close to shore for loading.
The lighthouse at the head of the pier was erected in 1894, and is listed as a separate waymark.
Should you care to visit this waymark, I ask that you please include a photo taken at the end of the jetty when you log your visit with something indicating the date of your visit. If you visit in the winter, dress warmly. The wind can be quite brisk out there over the water. I would also recommend carrying at least a small bottle of water with you, because you're going to be making a 3 km round trip. 3 km is a lot further than it seems.
Another interesting thing to do, is to visit at ebb tide, and wait for the tide to change. It is AMAZING how quick all that sand you can see in the photos gets covered with water. Not very deep, but covered.
This is one of my favorite places to go when I visit SA.
Type of pier: Public
Expenses: No admission or fees
Parking is available: Yes
Web site: [Web Link]
Contact information: Since this is a public government owned pier, I could only suggest contacting the SA government. There is no contact information listed anywhere around the pier, and only the phone number for the local caravan park for information.
