The bear is the heraldic animal of Bern, so there are a lot of bear statues all around town. These two large stone bears are sitting at the entrance of the history museum.

The history museum of Bern was built in 1894 in a historic style. It has two life size bears sitting over the entrance. They are made of the typical greenish local limestone that was used for many historic buildings in Bern. I could not find any documentation about the bears or the artist.
According to popular etymology Bern is named after bear, there is a tale that Berchtold V. von Zähringen decided to name his new founded town after the first animal caught in the surroundings, this was a bear. Although the name is more probably of Celtic origin and all those stories are not true, bears are very important here and you can find them all over town. It is also in the flag of the town and the canton Bern.
