Dornes tower is an old Templar Tower located in Dornes, center of Portugal.
It was built in the second half of the 12th century under the orders of Dom Gualdim Pais, a Templar Knight and a Crusader that fought wight Dom Afonso Henriques (First King of Portugal) and at the time, GRand Master of the Templar Order in Portugal.
The has a strange shape. It has 5 sides (Pentagon), probably because it was built over an older Roman tower and it´s purpose was to reenforce the Tagus defensive line.
Later, in the 16th century, after loosing it´s defensive functions, the tower was transformed into a bell tower.
It´s classified has a Public Interest Building since 1943.
